Like most villages and towns in the Alpujarras, Órgiva is of Moorish heritage, reflected in the flat-roofed houses and narrow streets. Órgiva is situated 59 km south-east of Granada, on the westside of the Alpujarras, at an elevation of 450m, 40km from the coast.

Orgiva is the largest commercial center of the Alpujarras. Fiestas like the Semana Santa before Easter and the Feria Grande, 5 days during the last weekend of September are visited by many locals and tourists.

Órgiva is one of the most culturally diverse town in Spain. Many foreign residents live here and a large part of them is involved in alternative healing and biological agriculture. It is also known for housing hippy communities on the banks of the river the Rio Guadalfeo. The local market offers biological products. fruits, herbs and vegetables. Hippies trade their handmade wares, herbal teas and remedies. A bohemien vibe makes a visit to this market an interesting experience.

Alpujarras is a genuine mountain region. It differs from the rest of Andalusia, life is a traditional one in the secluded villages. Clear water flows the slopes where tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges and almond trees are grown. Via an age-old irrigation system, the acequias. Here you’ll find the Mediterranean culture: take things easy and take time to enjoy life.

North of Orgiva lies the Sierra Nevada. This is the well-known large skiing area and the snowcapped mountains are visible from the town. The Sierra Nevada draws many tourists at the beginning of September, when the Vuelta cycling tour passes through. The National Parc Sierra Nevada is known for it’s flora and fauna. Due to the difference in heights, different micro-climates exist. Many plants are endemic and there is a large variety. There are 60 kinds of birds and animals like mountain goats, foxes and wild cats.
